How to handle HOSTILE audience…

31 08 2008

Last night, I was able to watch street magicians do crash performances in the a local pub in davao. I even became one of their “victims” wherein one of them did the 2 card monte on me. Though I know how to do the trick I didn’t reveal myself as a street magician too. It was later that night, that a probably 20 year old street magician got caught up in a fight with a bystander there. I really dont know exactly what caused the fight, all i know is the bystander got pissed off. So I thought of posting this bit of wisdom Read the rest of this entry »

Places that I crash…

29 08 2008

CRASH PERFORMANCE – a magic or mentalism performance which is informal or impromptu. It can be performed for free as long as the performer feels to do so.

There are a few places here in Gensan where I do crash performances on close up magic and mentalism. Prolly coz I got tired of doing crashes on streets like I used to do during my early years as a street magician. So if you want to catch a glimpse of me performing you Read the rest of this entry »

I wish I could help out

17 08 2008

Just tonight, when I was about to dine I was asked by crew from a famous restaurant. Well, I can’t really give out the details on it.

I was asked to put my mentalism capabilities into use. Somehow, they had some problem with people in the restaurant but they can’t point out the culprit for it. Since I use to do crash performances there on mentalism, they thought I could help them out. Simply put, I was asked to point out the culprit.

Well after doing a bit of NLP and Psychological illusions through conversations Read the rest of this entry »

TIPS FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING

12 08 2008

Here’s an article that I got from Nomer’s multiply site, a fellow mentalist in Manila who is an expert on Telekinesis. This does not only apply to mentalists/magicians but also to other public speakers out there. Enjoy.

A good Mentalist needs to be a good speaker below are some tips for effective public speaking. Hope this helps my fellow Mentalists and Magicians.

Know the room.
Be familiar with the place in which you will speak.
Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and Read the rest of this entry »

The Beauty of N.L.P.

12 08 2008

Everytime I do psychological illusions and the sorts, I always tell people that what I’m feeding them is not true especially on my vodoo doll routine. It just seemed true because I applied N.L.P. on them.

“N.L.P.? Ano yun? National Library of the Philippines?”

“Of course not. Its Neuro Linguistic Programming”.

The term defines itself. I always get arrays of question on it especially when I say that it is applied in business, lectures and the stuff thus explaining why some people are more persuasive than others. I was even asked from my colleagues in the Nursing Field to teach them about it even though they are already supervisors at their fields. I am a bit hesitant even if I’m sure they will put it into good use because of the fact that I really didn’t have a formal education on it. I just learned Read the rest of this entry »

Marketing Mentalism in Gensan

12 08 2008

Unlike Davao City, marketing the art of mentalism in Gensan is particularly hard. Considering the fact that General Santos City is a small city and people are shall I say “not aware” about the art of mentalism, introducing it is like having a lecture. Whenever a client asks me for a demo I always get the statement “mentalism? ano yun para sa mga baliw?”, in contradiction to this mentalism is not for the weak minded.

What I usually do for a demo is present routines from magic and later on show them some feats in mentalism. Mentalism simply put, is an art which Read the rest of this entry »

People I look up to

12 08 2008

As a magician and mentalist, there are persons that I look up to and gain motivation from. Being what I am now is basically a dream come true. A dream that I had way back when I was a boy. At this point in time I am still in gasped seeing other magicians and mentalist perform and very much enjoy their performance.

Let’s start off with Magic. Since I am into close up magic, I rarely look up to stage magicians.

1.) David Blaine – David Blaine (born David Blaine White on April 4, 1973 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.) is an American world record holding magician and endurance artist. He made Read the rest of this entry »

Just a point of information

12 08 2008

I just had a call a while ago from somebody who wants me to perform for a private party at Polomolok, South Cotabato. I declined the offer.

The reason for it is coz when I do shows, I want to give it a 100% performance. I usually decline emergency offers where I have to do a show after 2 hours since not only will I wont be able to give a 100% performance it will also damage my repertoir as a Read the rest of this entry »

Braggin about my calling card…

12 08 2008

I have new calling cards!

When I do impromptu performances on the streets, on coffee shops, and other public venues I never fail to give out my self created calling card. Since I don’t have any promotion on newspapers and other stuff before, I usually rely on my calling card and how people spread the word about me.

The Nate Marx Calling Card

Somehow, my calling card improved a bit. Basically I have two set of calling cards, a simple one with the basic features of a calling card and the other one, a very tiny booklet just the same size as the calling card that entails the kind of show I perform.

People love the look and most of the time I ran out of calling card in my wallet. The Ace with the eye on the middle give a freaky feel to it. When you look at it from a distance it may look like a card.

My First Citation over the net

11 08 2008

After doing a walkaround performance in Six Blings’ Party I got featured in the event organizer’s blog site which was very flattering.

From www.gensan.wordpress.com

From www.gensan.wordpress.com

“We truly liked his David Blaine street magician tricks. Oh did I say he’s very young, very Filipino and does not look like a magician at all? You wouldn’t guess he is a magician. But once you see his card tricks and those mind-reading stunts, you will be impressed. ” – Cathy Bolodo (Chimes Concepts)

MAGIC TO MENTALISM

11 08 2008

As the tides roll, so did my performing art. Right now I am into the art of Mentalism, this is the craft that I’m marketing right now. Basically, because this craft simply represents my character and capabilities at some point.

At the middle of my shows (close-up magic shows), I always introduce the art of mentalism. Then people would ask “Mentalism ano yan? Para sa mga baliw?”. I always get this statement.
I give them a very direct answer at the same time let them experience what mentalism is.

Here’s an example: Read the rest of this entry »

Creating Magic

11 08 2008

Everytime after my show or a crash performance people would ask me why I indulged myself into magic and mentalism. My first answer would be to be “UNIQUE”, then to “TOUCH OTHER PEOPLE’s LIVES”. We can’t deny the fact the everybody want to be amazed not only by magic. Somehow that sense of amazement brings us into a child like state.

From then on, whenever I do shows magic, mentalism or Psych Illusions I always emphasize the joy of being a child. As what DAVID BLAINE said “You cant do magic to a child, because he is already living in a world filled with it”.

Magic in its basic form is really for entertainment thus it should not be used in any other purposes such as changing the belief of people. One form of magic where there is the exploitation of the art and the vulnerability of layman is the chess stuff or the find the peanut under the cups. To whoever is reading this blog, don’t ever bet on them! You will never win!

What is stage magic?

11 08 2008

Here’s a vid of Stage Magic

Stage illusions are performed for large audiences, typically within an auditorium. This type of magic is distinguished by large-scale props, the use of assistants and often, exotic animals such as elephants and tigers.

Children’s magic is performed for an audience primarily composed of children. It is typically performed at birthday parties, preschools, elementary schools, Sunday Schools or libraries. This type of Read the rest of this entry »

What is Close – up Magic?

11 08 2008

When I get invited to perform for a party people are expecting me to do stage magic which is totally different from my form of magic. Basically there are many types of magic depending on the training the magician had or the type of venue he has. Traditionally, people are oriented with stage magic or parlor magic wherein there are elaborate and colorful props. Routines such as cutting a woman in half and pulling a rabbit out of a hat are more known to them.

Close up magicians on the other hand like me don’t use those kind of props. We mainly use cards, coins and basically everyday objects or materials that we can borrow from spectators. In contrast to stage magic we tend to be close to our spectators in a sense that we Read the rest of this entry »

Misunderstood

11 08 2008

On contemporary, there is this big misconception on the art of magic which is held not only by spectators but also by other magicians. Magic is regarded as the art of deception, art of trickery, art of lies. This simply happens because of the poor performances of so- called “magicians” or people who just had a hand on some magic equipment they bought from a local magic shop. Being a magician does not mean being able to do simple card tricks with the Read the rest of this entry »

My First show in General Santos (Jan. 26, 2008)

11 08 2008

I started performing at 9 PM and went on and on until 1 am.
I performed table to table, from group to group each with
varieties in mood. I was a bit
nervous though since I’m performing in an environment that
is very new to me, a BAR.
The place is different, the people are different not like the ones
I am mesmerizing at
the streets. Now here is what I’m really Read the rest of this entry »

Categories of Effect (Magic)

11 08 2008

The 7 Categories of effect.

Production The magician produces something from nothing—a rabbit from an empty hat, a fan of cards from thin air, a shower of coins from an empty bucket, or the magician themselves, appearing in a puff of smoke on an empty stage — all of these effects are productions.

Vanishing The magician makes something disappear—a coin, a cage of doves, milk from a newspaper, an assistant from a cabinet, or even the Statue of Liberty. A vanish, being the reverse of a production, may use a similar technique, in reverse.

Transformation The magician transforms something from one state into another—a silk handkerchief changes colour, a lady turns into a tiger, an indifferent card changes to the spectator’s chosen card. A transformation can be seen as a combination of a vanish and a production. Read the rest of this entry »

History of Magic

11 08 2008

A Brief History of Magic
2600 B.C. – Present

Considered the “second oldest profession”, Magic has been recorded as far back as 2600 B.C. Though this is still disputed, in an Egyptian tomb there is a hieroglyphic which seems to depict the Cups and Balls trick. Some scholars interpret this painting as just a couple people playing a game. Read the rest of this entry »

WHO THE HECK IS NATE MARX??

Known as “Gensan’s Mentalist and Street Magician”, Nate was exposed to the wonder of magic at the age of 8, he has been a huge fan of the craft. He adored the work of magicians, one of which is David Copperfield. Moreover he enjoyed watching clowns do their stunts at parties, producing all sorts of stuff from a bag. He enjoyed how magic affected people and became a huge fan of it.

Prior to his “becoming” a magician, he saw the performances of David Blaine on a TV special that depicts the art of magic being performed on the streets. The idea of putting magic Read the rest of this entry »
